Got Knee Pain?

Do you have pain in your knee when you ski, run, squat, or walk up or down stairs?

If this pain has come on gradually, and hurts near or under the knee cap, it could be Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome (PFPS).  PFPS is thought to be caused by irritation under the patella (knee cap) as a result of stress and improper tracking (movement) of the patella on the femur (thigh bone). A number of factors may contribute to PFPS including hip and lower extremity weakness, poor quality and coordination of movement, improper training, and joint range of motion impairments.

A physical therapist can help you determine if PFPS is the cause of your knee pain, and which factors primarily contribute to your pain through a thorough evaluation. A combination of manual therapy, exercise, and modalities will be used to treat the pain and dysfunction. The majority of cases of PFPS are resolved conservatively, and most individuals who attend physical therapy are able to return to their prior painfree level of function within 3 months.
